DMA setup for Escape from Tarkov: BattlEye and raid length
Escape from Tarkov runs BattlEye plus Battlestate's own detection layer. Why BattlEye's pre-launch behaviour changes the setup order, and why a read-only build suits this title.
Short answer
Escape from Tarkov runs BattlEye, which loads first and can refuse to start the game, plus Battlestate's own detection. With a DMA card in the game PC and the reader on a second PC, loot and player information is valuable without an input device. For Escape from Tarkov, this store sells an external cheat (/products/tarkov) and a DMA cheat with a Direct build (/products/tarkov-dma).

Which anti-cheat does Tarkov use?
Escape from Tarkov uses BattlEye, whose own documentation says it protects the game from the moment the game is launched. Its service starts before the game process and can stop the game from starting at all if it does not like what it finds. Battlestate Games runs its own detection layer alongside it, and that layer is unusually interested in hardware identity. Tarkov checks a wider set of machine identifiers than most titles, including TPM data where a TPM is present. BattlEye is the headline name, but the BSG layer is what makes this title distinctive.
Why BattlEye changes the start-up order
On most titles the anti-cheat loads with the game and evaluates the machine at that moment. On Tarkov the anti-cheat service is up before the game window exists, which makes the sequence stricter rather than harder. Anything you want settled about the game PC's state has to be settled before you press launch. In practice, bring the card and the reader up first, then start the launcher and let BattlEye do its pass. Once that pass has begun, change nothing on the game PC.
What does Tarkov require today?
Verified September 2026. Re-check the stated-direction row, since it describes a research direction rather than a current requirement.
- Anti-cheat
- BattlEye, kernel-mode, service starts before the game
- Second layer
- Battlestate's own detection, with extended hardware fingerprinting
- Secure Boot
- Not required at present
- TPM 2.0
- Not required at present, but TPM data is read where a TPM is enabled
- Stated direction
- BSG has said it is researching TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot requirements to lock out repeat offenders
- Ban style
- Hardware-keyed bans are normal on this title, not exceptional
What hardware does a Tarkov build need?
Tarkov is a title where a read-only build delivers most of the value. A radar or item view on a second screen shows where players and extracts are and what is worth picking up. It needs no input device, no fuser and no overlay on the game PC. Aim assistance adds an input device that must present itself to the game PC as an ordinary USB mouse, and that device can fail mid-raid. Because Tarkov raids are long and losing one costs real gear, every extra component is a real concern here.
In what order should you start a raid?
- Check the status board before you plan a session, and compare it against the game's last build date
- Boot the game PC and let Windows settle completely
- Boot the second PC and confirm the card enumerates
- Start the reader and attach to the card before the launcher opens
- Open the BSG launcher and let it finish any update before pressing play
- Let BattlEye complete its pass and reach the main menu before attaching to the game
- Attach once you are in a raid, not in the hideout, if your build resolves raid state only
- If a fuser is in the path, use borderless windowed, because alt-tabbing to the wiki mid-raid is normal on this title and a mode switch resyncs the signal
Pre-raid checklist for Tarkov
- You checked the status board row for this title today
- The launcher has finished updating, so it cannot patch the client between raids
- The card is in its data port and the reader attached before the launcher opened
- Nothing on the game PC has changed since BattlEye's pass began
- The second PC's USB path is clean, because a reader drop mid-raid costs gear, not a round
- You accept a hardware-keyed ban as the realistic worst case on this title
- Borderless windowed is set if a fuser is in the video path
Common Tarkov problems and how to fix them
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Game will not start at all after you changed something on the game PC | BattlEye's pre-launch pass rejected the machine state | Revert the change, confirm the game launches on its own with no reader involved, then reintroduce one thing at a time |
| Reader attaches in the hideout but shows nothing | Normal for builds that resolve raid state only | Get into a raid before diagnosing, and if it is still empty there, check the status board |
| Everything stopped working with no patch notes | BattlEye updates independently of the game and does not appear in BSG patch notes | Compare the status date with the game's last build date on the status board, and if the game has not moved, assume an anti-cheat-side change |
| Reader drops mid-raid | USB path, not the card — cable, hub, or a shared controller on the second PC | Use a rear USB 3 port and a short known-good cable with nothing else on that controller, then test the read rate outside a raid |
| Launcher updates mid-session and the build stops matching | The client moved under you between raids | Close everything, re-check the status board, and do not attach an old build to a new client |
Common questions about Tarkov builds
Does Tarkov require Secure Boot or TPM 2.0?
Not at present, although BSG has publicly said it is researching both as requirements. Tarkov already reads TPM data as part of its hardware fingerprinting where a TPM is enabled. Treat this as the answer most likely to change in the next year.
Why does BattlEye matter more than the game's launch order suggests?
Because its service is up before the game, the game PC has to be in its final state before you press play. If you change the machine after BattlEye's pass has started, you produce failures you cannot reproduce.
Is a read-only build enough for Tarkov?
For most of the value, yes, because player positions, extracts and loot are information, which is what memory reads produce. It is also the build least likely to fail in the middle of a raid.
Does a DMA card protect me from Tarkov's hardware bans?
No. Tarkov's fingerprinting reads identifiers the game PC exposes: disk serials, MAC addresses, machine GUID, firmware values and TPM data where present. A card in a PCIe slot changes none of them.
How often does Tarkov break a build?
It breaks on its own patches, on wipes and on BattlEye updates that are never announced. Those unannounced updates are why a status row can go stale with no game patch to point at, so check the board before a session.
Info
Is a Tarkov build working right now?
BattlEye's architecture and BSG's stated direction are durable facts, but whether a Tarkov build works right now is not. The status board shows the publication date of a status next to the game's own last build date. BattlEye can change without either date moving, which is why the live board is the source of truth.
Sources
The BattlEye and Battlestate details come from bench work rather than published fact, and a wipe or a quiet BattlEye update with no patch notes can date them overnight.
