Using a laptop as the second PC
When a laptop is the better buy, what its USB ports need and why docks and hubs break a DMA link. It also explains throttling under sustained reads and the power settings behind phantom disconnects.
Short answer
Laptops with native USB 3, 16 GB RAM and enough cooling for sustained reads work as DMA second PCs. Connect the card to a built-in port, never a hub or dock, and disable USB selective suspend on AC and battery before trusting the link.

Why use a laptop as the second PC?
A laptop brings its own screen, keyboard and battery, so as a second PC it saves three purchases and a lot of desk clutter. It also makes the whole rig portable, and if you already own one that sits unused, it is the cheapest route. The trade-off is thermal headroom and port quality, and both are manageable once you know which settings to change.
What specs does the laptop need?
Check the USB port first, because a laptop that fails that line is not usable for this job, however fast its CPU is.

- At least one built-in USB 3 port — USB-A 3.x, or USB-C with USB 3 data, not a charge-only or display-only port
- RAM
- 16 GB. Many thin laptops solder it, so this is a purchase decision, not an upgrade
- Storage
- NVMe or SATA SSD
- Cooling
- An active fan. Fully passive ultrabooks throttle under a sustained read
- Power
- Its own charger, connected. This is not a battery workload
- Screen
- 13 inch or larger if you intend to read a radar from it directly
- Network
- Ethernet, or a USB Ethernet adapter on a different port, if you need a link between machines

Why docks and hubs break the DMA link
Docks and hubs are the number one cause of laptop-specific failures. Thin laptops ship with two or three ports, so people add a dock, which is a USB hub with extra silicon. A dock breaks a DMA link in three ways. It adds another hub stage between the card and the host controller, and it shares one upstream link across every attached device. It also renegotiates that link whenever anything else is plugged in or unplugged. The result is a card that works for ten minutes and then drops, or a read rate that is a fraction of what the hardware can do. Connect the card to a built-in port and keep the dock for a mouse and a monitor.
Heat and throttling under a sustained read
A reader keeps one core busy all the time, which is a different load from the bursts a laptop is tuned for. Thin chassis respond by throttling, and on a throttled second PC the overlay stutters on a regular schedule rather than at random. There are two fixes, and both are cheap. Raise the rear of the laptop so the air intake is not against the desk, and set the Windows power plan to a performance profile while it runs on AC. If the machine still throttles hard, that is a good reason to choose a mini PC with a proper heatsink instead.
Laptop power settings to change
The laptop symptom that confuses people most is a card that disappears while nobody is touching the machine, and these settings are the cause. Change all of them before you conclude that the hardware is faulty.
- Plug the charger in and leave it connected, because every step below assumes AC power
- Open Control Panel, then Power Options, and select a high performance or balanced plan rather than a battery saver plan
- Open Change plan settings, then Change advanced power settings
- Expand USB settings, then USB selective suspend setting, and set it to Disabled for both On battery and Plugged in
- Expand Sleep and set Sleep after and Hibernate after to Never while plugged in
- In Device Manager, open each USB Root Hub and USB Hub entry and, if it has a Power Management tab, clear Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power
- Turn Windows battery saver off, because it re-applies power limits regardless of the selected plan
- Reboot once, then reconnect the card and run your read test again
Where to put the laptop screen
If the laptop screen is your radar, its physical size and position matter more than its resolution, because a radar you have to lean towards is a radar you stop checking. Place the laptop beside the main monitor at a similar height and angle, not flat on the desk below it. A 13 inch screen at the right height reads better than a 17 inch screen lying flat. If that layout does not work on your desk, a small portable monitor on a stand, or a phone used as a web-radar screen, is often the better answer.
Laptop or mini PC: which should you choose?
For the same money you get a differently shaped machine, so choose based on your constraints rather than on preference.

Laptop questions
Can I connect the card to a USB-C port?
Yes, if that port carries USB 3 data, but some USB-C ports on laptops are for power or display only. Before you assume, check the icon next to the port and the manufacturer's specification.
Why does my card drop out when I walk away from the machine?
It is almost always USB selective suspend, or a USB Root Hub with power management still enabled, so Windows suspends the port once it is idle. Turn selective suspend off in Power Options and clear the power-saving checkbox on each USB hub in Device Manager that shows it.
Can I use the laptop on battery?
It will run, but power policy on battery is the opposite of what this workload needs. Battery saver also re-applies USB suspension, so keep the laptop on AC.
Is a gaming laptop a good second PC?
It works, and its cooling and port count are usually good, but you are paying for a GPU the reader will never use. If you are buying specifically for this job, a mini PC is better value.
Can I close the lid and use an external monitor?
Yes, but first set the lid-close action to Do nothing in Power Options. Otherwise, closing the lid puts the machine to sleep and the USB link goes down with it.
