Choosing a mini PC as your second PC
What a mini PC needs as a DMA second PC: rear USB 3 ports, a fast single-thread CPU and 16 GB of RAM. The display output must match your monitor plan, and several advertised specs make no difference.

What does the second PC actually do?
The second PC pulls memory over USB, parses it and draws a picture. That means a stream of small reads, a lot of pointer chasing and a 2D overlay, not a rendering workload. Three things on the spec sheet decide whether it runs well: the USB path first, then the speed of one CPU core, then enough RAM for the reader plus a browser. Everything else on a mini PC spec sheet makes no difference to this job.
Minimum specs for a DMA second PC
If a machine misses any of these lines, it either does not work at all or works so badly that you end up replacing it. Check the seller's spec sheet against this list before you buy, not after.

- Any modern x86-64 quad-core. Single-thread performance matters far more than core count

- 16 GB. 8 GB boots and runs, then leaves nothing for a browser next to the overlay

- An SSD, NVMe or SATA. A mechanical drive makes every loader start a wait

- At least one rear-panel USB 3 port wired directly to a USB controller. Not a front header, not a hub, not a dock
- Display out
- One output that matches your monitor plan: HDMI, DisplayPort, or USB-C with DisplayPort alt mode
- Network
- Gigabit Ethernet if you plan on KMBox Net, a web radar, or remote flashing
- GPU
- Integrated is enough. There is nothing in this workload for a discrete card to do
Which tier of mini PC do you need?
The tiers are described by spec class, not by model name or price, because both change monthly and a list of them would be wrong within a quarter. Find the row whose workload matches what you intend to run, then shop for a machine that meets that row.

The budget row is not a compromised build, because a clean USB path on a low-power machine beats a fast machine reading through a hub.
Which of the two common mini PC types should you buy?
When you search for a mini PC, almost every result falls into one of two groups. The first is built on Intel's low-power N-series, currently N100 and N150 class parts. These machines are cheap and passive or near-silent, with one memory slot, and they are enough for radar-led builds. The second group is built on Ryzen mobile-class silicon or the equivalent Intel U and H mobile parts, which bring more single-thread performance, dual-channel memory and more USB, along with more heat. Both families work, and for a first build we recommend the N-series. Buy a mobile-class machine when you already know you want an overlay plus capture on the same box.

How to check a mini PC's USB ports
A listing that says four USB ports tells you nothing useful on its own. What you need to know is how many of those ports are USB 3 rather than USB 2, and whether they sit on the rear or the front. You also need to know whether they connect directly to a USB controller or through an internal hub that the vendor added to inflate the port count. A card on a rear port that shares nothing is stable. The same card on a front port behind an internal hub is the classic cause of dropouts in the middle of a match. If the listing does not say, assume the worst and ask the seller.

Which specs can you ignore?
A discrete GPU brings no benefit, because the overlay is 2D and integrated graphics draw it with ease. High core counts do not help either, since one thread dominates the read and parse path. Wi-Fi 7, Thunderbolt marketing, RGB, an extra M.2 slot and a bundled VESA mount change nothing here, because none of them decide whether the stack initialises. If a machine costs more than a similar one because of any of those extras, spend the money on RAM and the SSD instead.
What to check before you buy
You can answer all six checks from the spec sheet or with one question to the seller.
- At least one rear-panel USB 3 port confirmed as USB 3.x, not USB 2
- 16 GB of RAM, or a free slot and a plan to fit it
- An SSD as the boot drive
- A display output that matches the screen or capture path you already own
- Gigabit Ethernet if a network link between the machines is part of your plan
- Windows licensed and installable, or you are budgeting for a licence
Mini PC questions
Is an N100-class mini PC really enough?
It is enough for radar, a modest ESP and driving an input device. It becomes the limit once you add a capture card, recording or heavy per-frame processing on top of the overlay. If budget is tight, start there and upgrade when you can name the specific thing that is too slow.
Do I need 32 GB of RAM?
No, 16 GB is the working minimum, and it covers the reader, the overlay and a browser. 32 GB is only useful if you run capture software or the tooling for several titles at once.
Can I use a Raspberry Pi or another ARM board?
Not in the usual setup, because the reader software and the FTDI D3XX driver are built for Windows on x86-64. Some projects run parts of the stack on other platforms, but that is not the supported path and not a project for a beginner.
Does the second PC need a graphics card for the overlay?
No, the overlay is 2D and integrated graphics handle it. A capture card is a separate device that deals with the video path, not with GPU performance.
Should I buy a used or a new mini PC?
Used is fine and often better value, because nothing in this workload stresses the hardware. Before you pay, check that the USB ports work, that the drive is an SSD and that there is a rear USB 3 port.
