Why most laptops cannot host a DMA card
The card has to go inside the machine being read, and it needs a PCIe connection with a physical socket you can reach. Desktops have spare PCIe slots, but laptops generally do not. What a laptop often does have is an M.2 slot, and an M.2 NVMe slot is electrically PCIe, which is why M.2 DMA cards exist. The catch is that on most gaming laptops that single M.2 slot holds the drive Windows boots from, and you cannot put a card where your operating system lives. So the real question is not whether laptops can host a card, but whether your particular laptop has a second slot that is actually free.
Which laptops can host a DMA card?
Find your type of laptop in the first column. The row with a genuinely empty second M.2 slot is the best chance of a yes, but most gaming laptops do not have one.

An M.2 slot existing is not the same as an M.2 slot being usable, because keying, PCIe wiring and physical length all have to line up. Any one of them can rule out an otherwise suitable machine.
How to check which slots your laptop has
Do all of this before ordering anything. The specification sheet is where you start, not the final answer, because manufacturers can change the slot configuration between revisions of the same model name.
- Look up your exact model and revision, not just the model family, and find the service manual if one exists
- Count the M.2 slots the manual lists, and note whether each one is PCIe or SATA-only
- Note the supported length for each slot, because an 80mm card does not fit a 42mm slot
- Open the bottom panel and look, because manuals and reality disagree more often than you would expect
- Confirm that the empty slot is really empty and not filled by a WiFi card, a 4G module or a shorter drive
- Check the clearance above the slot, because a DMA card is not as flat as an NVMe drive and many laptops have only millimetres to spare
- Check what cools that area, because an FPGA under sustained read load produces heat an NVMe slot was not designed for

The most common version of this question comes from someone with one M.2 slot who wants to move Windows to an external drive and put the card in the freed slot. Technically there are ways to boot a laptop from external storage, but in practice it turns a supported machine into an unsupported one. It makes your boot path depend on a USB device and gives you a build whose first failure mode is the laptop not starting. It is not worth it: if the only slot holds your boot drive, this laptop is not the host machine.

This comes up constantly and deserves a straight answer rather than a flat no. A Thunderbolt or USB4 PCIe expansion enclosure does put a real PCIe slot on the end of a cable, and cards do physically fit in one. What is unpredictable is everything after that, starting with how the enclosure and the host present the device. It is also unclear how the platform handles an unfamiliar card behind a Thunderbolt controller, and whether your firmware provider supports this path at all. Ask your provider that last question before you buy the enclosure, because the answer decides whether the rest matters.

Why heat matters in a laptop M.2 slot
An M.2 slot in a laptop was designed to cool a drive that is busy in short bursts, while an FPGA reading memory continuously is a different kind of load. That slot gets less airflow than the same card would get in a desktop, and it sits under a bottom panel that also has to cool a CPU and a GPU. This does not necessarily stop the build working, but it is a real constraint that desktop guides never mention. Keep it in mind before you decide that an intermittent fault is a cable. If you go this route, monitor the heat rather than assuming a tight slot behaves like an open one.

Turn the problem around, because a laptop makes a good second PC. It does not need a graphics card for that job, it has its own screen for the overlay, it takes up no extra desk space, and you already own it. So for most laptop owners the cheaper and far more reliable answer is a used ex-lease desktop as the gaming host, with a standard PCIe card in it. The laptop then does the reading. That costs less than a Thunderbolt enclosure, puts the card in a slot designed for cards, and removes all of the laptop constraints described above.

Questions about DMA on a laptop
My laptop has one M.2 slot with Windows on it. Any option at all?
Not a good one. If you free the slot by booting the laptop from external storage, the build's first failure mode becomes the machine not starting. Use the laptop as the second PC and put the card in a desktop instead.
Will an M.2 DMA card perform worse than a PCIe one?
Not inherently, because an M.2 NVMe slot is PCIe. The practical differences are the thermal headroom in a cramped slot and a smaller library of published firmware images.
