This shelf covers everything between deciding to buy a board and having one that your second PC can see. That means choosing a class, seating the card, binding the right driver and proving the USB path. This stage is where first builds fail, and a firmware product page covers none of it.

The number is FPGA logic capacity, not a safety score: 35T suits radar-only use, 75T has the widest firmware support and 100T the most headroom. Choose M.2 if no PCIe slot is free. Buy the class your firmware provider publishes images for, then check that the card physically fits the slot.
Shut down and unplug the game PC, then seat the card fully in a free PCIe or M.2 slot with clearance beside the GPU. Screw the bracket down and run a USB 3 cable from the card's data port to a rear USB 3 port on the second PC. Boot the game PC first and confirm the card enumerates before you install any driver.
On the second PC, install the FTDI D3XX driver for the FT601 data bridge before any reader software, and the CH347 driver for flashing. Plug the cable into the card's data port, then confirm the device appears in Device Manager. "Unable to connect to USB/FT601" almost always means the wrong port, a charge-only cable or a missing FTDI driver.
Run your firmware's read-speed tool from the second PC, with the card in its data port and nothing else on that USB controller. A healthy result is tens to low hundreds of MB/s, depending on card class and firmware. Anything far lower almost always means a USB path fault: charge-only cable, front-panel header, hub or USB 2 link.
Fix cheap layers first, since a proper USB 3 cable, valid memory map and direct rear-port USB path cost almost nothing and cause most complaints. A bigger FPGA is the last upgrade, not the first, because it fixes nothing a bad cable caused.
Usually no, because a standard gaming laptop has no accessible PCIe slot and its only M.2 slot holds the boot drive. The two exceptions worth checking are a genuinely free second M.2 slot and a Thunderbolt PCIe enclosure that properly exposes the bus.
