DMA setup for Dead by Daylight: EAC, anti-cheat trials and 4v1 play
Dead by Daylight has shipped Easy Anti-Cheat for years and is now trialling other providers on Steam. Learn what that means for a build and why 4v1 changes what a radar is for.
Short answer
Dead by Daylight has used kernel-level Easy Anti-Cheat for years, and since 2 September 2026 Behaviour has also run limited-time Anti-Cheat Trials on Steam. The first trial uses Denuvo Anti-Cheat, so the anti-cheat under a build can change while the game stays the same.

Easy Anti-Cheat and the new anti-cheat trials
Dead by Daylight's long-standing anti-cheat is Easy Anti-Cheat, Epic's kernel-mode product, which is what the game's own error strings refer to and what the EasyAntiCheat launcher folder is for. On 2 September 2026 Behaviour Interactive began what it calls its Anti-Cheat Trials, which are limited-time trials of other providers' tools. The first is Denuvo Anti-Cheat, and the aim is to find out which provider reduces cheating by a measurable amount. Behaviour has stated that the trials are Steam-only, that cross-play is unaffected, and that Denuvo Anti-Cheat is not the Denuvo anti-piracy product. Steam Deck and Proton compatibility is still being tested, and more providers are expected over the following months.
How do the trials affect a build?
This situation is unusual, because the anti-cheat can change while the game itself does not.
| Situation | Anti-cheat in play | What it means for a build |
|---|---|---|
| Steam, outside a trial window | Easy Anti-Cheat, kernel-mode | The familiar shape: a kernel component on the game PC, which is the reason the reader lives on a second machine |
| Steam, inside a trial window | The provider being trialled — Denuvo Anti-Cheat first | A different kernel-mode product with different behaviour, deployed without the game around it changing |
| Other storefronts | Easy Anti-Cheat | Trials are Steam-only, so two players in one lobby can be running different anti-cheats |
| Public Test Build | Whatever the PTB branch ships with | The PTB is a separate install on a separate branch. Nothing written for live applies to it |
Before you read a status row, check which client and which storefront you are on. During a trial window, a row dated before the window opened tells you nothing about the trial build.
Warning
Why builds can break on two separate schedules
Dead by Daylight patches on a chapter and mid-chapter schedule: a chapter arrives roughly every three months, with mid-chapter patches in between, plus hotfixes. On top of that, the anti-cheat can now be swapped on a schedule that Behaviour sets. Because the two schedules run at the same time, a build can stop working on a day when the game did not update. Only the status board can tell you which of the two schedules moved.
What each side needs from a read-only build
Every other title in these per-game guides is symmetrical, but Dead by Daylight puts four survivors against one killer, and the two sides want opposite things from a read-only build. The killer side wants survivor positions, which generator is being worked on and where a chase is heading. The survivor side wants the killer's position and patrol direction, as well as static details such as generators, totems, chests and the hatch. Almost none of that needs an input device, and most killer powers do not involve hitscan aiming. That makes this the clearest read-only, second-screen title in the catalogue, and the input layer is the one most builds for it leave out.
How opponents notice a build during a match
In a 6v6 shooter a suspicious moment lasts a second, but in Dead by Daylight a match lasts ten to fifteen minutes and four opponents spend that time watching one player. Think of a killer who walks straight to a hidden survivor, or one who never checks the wrong locker. Everyone in the match can read that behaviour, and the report system exists for exactly that reason. No architecture changes this, which is why a build that reads well but is played badly is worse than no build at all.
The right order to start a session
The anti-cheat has its own launcher stage, which is where most first-session failures happen, so let it finish before anything else touches the machine.
- Launch the game on the game PC and let the anti-cheat launcher finish, with no reader attached
- Reach the main menu and confirm the storefront has finished updating the client
- Read today's status row for your build and compare its date with the start or end of any trial window
- Boot the second PC, confirm the card enumerates, then start the reader
- Attach once you are in the lobby, not during the anti-cheat launcher stage
- If a fuser is in the video path, set borderless fullscreen and match the resolution and refresh rate on both machines so that loading a match does not renegotiate the display mode
Dead by Daylight checklist before each match
- The game launches through its own anti-cheat launcher and reaches the menu with no reader attached
- You know which storefront you are on and whether a trial window is currently open
- You have read today's status row for your build and compared its date with any trial window
- You are on the live branch, not the Public Test Build
- The card is in its data port, and the reader was attached before the game started
- You have decided what the information layer is for on the side you are playing
- The build has no input device unless the feature set genuinely needs one
Common Dead by Daylight problems and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Easy Anti-Cheat is not installed | The anti-cheat bootstrap is missing, or it was removed by a cleanup tool or an interrupted update | Verify or repair the game files through the storefront, then reinstall the anti-cheat from the game's own EasyAntiCheat folder. This problem has nothing to do with the card |
| EAC client cannot be instantiated, or the launcher closes immediately | A partial or outdated anti-cheat install, usually after a patch or a provider swap | Let the storefront finish updating, verify the files and launch the game alone, and keep the reader out of it while you diagnose the problem |
| The build worked yesterday, and the game has not been patched | A trial window started or ended, or the anti-cheat updated on its own | Check the status board, and treat a row dated before the trial window opened or closed as not applicable |
| Input feels sluggish or frame times spike during a trial window | Players have reported input and performance problems during the trial window, unrelated to any build | Test the game alone with nothing attached before blaming the stack. If the problem still appears on a clean setup, it is not your hardware |
Dead by Daylight setup questions
Which anti-cheat does Dead by Daylight use?
Easy Anti-Cheat is its long-standing kernel-mode anti-cheat. Since 2 September 2026 Behaviour Interactive has also been running limited-time Anti-Cheat Trials on Steam, starting with Denuvo Anti-Cheat.
Is Denuvo Anti-Cheat the same as Denuvo DRM?
No. Behaviour has stated clearly that the trial has nothing to do with anti-piracy DRM, and Denuvo Anti-Cheat is a separate product aimed at in-game cheat detection.
Does the trial apply to every version of the game?
Behaviour has said the trials are exclusive to Steam and that cross-play is not affected, which means two players in the same match can be running different anti-cheats.
Do I need an input device for a Dead by Daylight build?
Usually not, because the value in this game is positional information rather than aim, and most builds are read-only on a second screen. Leaving out the input layer also leaves out its risk and its cost.
Is a Dead by Daylight build supported right now?
The store sells an external Dead by Daylight cheat at /products/dbd and a read-only DMA cheat at /products/dbd-dma. Only the live status board can say whether either works today, and a row dated before a trial window opened or closed may not apply.
Info
What we can't confirm about future trials
Which anti-cheat will be in place next month is Behaviour's decision, and it has said the trials will continue with other providers. Read the status board, compare each row's date with the trial windows, and ask support before you buy rather than after.
Sources
The anti-cheat trial details come from running the build rather than from a published source, and the provider under the game can change while the game itself stays the same.
